Heating Microscope Analysis for Frits - HMA

The heating microscope describes the melting of frits during the heating process. A cylinder of 2 x 3mm pressed of fine ground frit (d50 ca. 5mm), is heated up with 30 - 40°C/min. During this process the silhouette is recorded and characteristics are determined by height as well as by foot angle:

Variables

SP - Sintering Point (V)

At this temperature the height of the cylinder shrinks by 5%

EP - Softening Point (V)

The beginning of softening: The temperature at which the corners show rounding.

K - Ball Point (V)

At this temperature the silhouette is similar to a ball.

HK - Melting Point (V)

Temperature at which the silhouette shows a foot angle of 90°.

F - Liquid Point (V)

The cylinder is melted to 1/3 of its former height.
