ISSN 1070-9274 Art Hazards NewsCenter for Safety in the Arts This 4 to 8 page newsletter is published by a small group of very dedicated people. This will be of special interest to educational institutions and people involved in building new studios and factories. After about 15 years this is now the authority on safety issues in the arts, and appears to be growing as a reference for arts related industries like ceramics, pottery, whiteware, etc. This is a great watch-dog to have on the job, and we've certainly appreciated it over the years. They also provide a variety of publications and books that zero in on specific branches of the arts. Vol 16, No. 1 dealt extensively with hazards most materials and process hazards in clay, glazes and firing. CSA also manages a free computer BBS (OSHBBS) and Web site with almost 1000 files for downloading. Arts Hazards News Special Resource Issue1994 was its 17th year, it lists many pages of USA and Canadian Occupational Health Clinics, Arts Medicine Services, Regional Poison Control Centres, Safety Supply Sources, NIOSH reps (National Center for Occupational Health Administration), OSHA reps (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), consultants, COSH Groups of Health Professionals, Household Hazardous Waste contacts and programs, an extensive CSA publications list, and General Data Sheets for many products. Artist BewareCentre for Safety in the Arts, 120 Wall Street, 10th Floor, NY, NY 1005 This has been a 'standard reference' in the pottery and ceramics community for some time. It deals with all kinds of ventilation, process and materials safety issues for many different arts. The Artists Complete Health and Safety GuideMonona Rossol, Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety (ACTS) This 300 page book covers materials and ventilation regulations in the USA and Canada, dangers by material groups and craft. It is an excellent reference for using potentially toxic materials safely and ethically. It deals with over a dozen branches of the arts of which ceramics and glass are two. Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and SafetyInternational Labour Organization, CH-1211, Geneva 22, Switzerland A huge reference of information on all major industries. Each is over viewed and main hazards and their prevention and elimination outlined. The section on the Pottery Industry is excellent. You can get copies of this from occupational health organizations. Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values & Biological Exposure IndicesAmerican Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, Cincinnati, OH An execellent reference with thorough descriptions of each mineral, CAS numbers, TLV's, case studies, etc. CCINFO discCanadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety, 250 Main Street East, This is a CD product which contains thousands of MSDS's on chemicals and minerals. They have a wide variety of reference materials that touch on ceramic materials and ceramic work related hazards. Hazardous Substances DatabankNational Library of Medicine, Toxicology Information Program A datafile of over 4000 chemical substances of known and suspected toxicity. Information is taken from publicly available sources which are cited. Listed are chemical and physical properties, handling, toxicity, pharmacology, exposure standards, monitoring, references.
